Our History
The original business was a market garden business, growing produce and selling this into local stores. The business then moved away from growing and focused on buying from wholesale markets then distributing to the local stores.
Bob Wells then added to the business and started banana importing and ripening in the late 40s. As the business expanded it was moved to Kings Langley in Hertfordshire then to Hemel Hempstead, before moving to where the business is present today in a purpose-built facility in Luton.
Our love for bananas and tropical fruit is still as strong today, as it was back in the late 40s when Bob Wells established the banana importing and ripening business. Now, like his father before him, Robert Wells and his team’s passion for the business has seen it grow to become one of the UK’s largest and most technologically advanced import, ripening and fruit distribution companies. SHP Group is family run business with a caring ethos to match, which has enabled the company to grow to become a leading fruit distributer to some of the country’s top retailers.
